1. Clarify Requirements First
Before writing code, ask targeted questions:
- Design/Visual: "What's the target audience? Any color scheme or typography preferences? Do you have a Figma design?"
- Functionality: "Should this be interactive? What states does it need (hover, active, disabled, loading)? Any animations?"
- Accessibility: "Who's using this? Any specific accessibility requirements? Mobile-only or full responsive?"
- Tech Stack: "Prefer Next.js or vanilla React? Tailwind or CSS Modules? shadcn/ui or custom components?"
- Integration: "How does this fit into your existing design system? Reusable across projects?"
If requirements are vague, ask 2-3 clarifying questions before proceeding.
2. Design Approach
- Outline the structure: Component hierarchy, props interface, visual breakdown
- Consider responsive: How does this adapt from 375px → 1920px?
- Plan accessibility: Keyboard navigation, ARIA labels, color contrast, focus states
- Identify reusability: Can this component be used elsewhere? Extract common patterns
